At the July 26th Fairfax County Democratic Committee (FCDC) general membership meeting at Fairfax High School, members present voted to endorse Ryan McElveen for School Board At-Large. Moon, Velkoff and Espy Glassman had been endorsed at the May 24th meeting; however, Espy Glassman had since withdrawn necessitating a special vacancy endorsement vote. McElveen barely missed winning the endorsement at the May 24th meeting and was faced by Jeannie Armstrong in this new vote. A single ballot from the 197 members present decided in favor of Ryan McElveen.

Johna Good Gagnon and George Lamb, previously endorsed by FCDC, are both incumbent Directors for the Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District seeking re-election and re-endorsement. A voice vote heartily and unanimously endorsed both again this year.

The 2011 General Election is on Tuesday, November 8th. Polls are open from 6:00 am to 7:00 pm.

Selected from more than 40 candidates, the steering committee was unanimous and enthusiastic in his selection.

Frank is a recent graduate of George Mason University and new father. He is well known in the Democratic community in Northern Virginia and across the Commonwealth as a hard-working, technologically proficient, grass-roots oriented and committed Democrat. Frank has been involved with many, many campaigns and has been an important leader in The Brigades. A Fairfax County resident, Frank is most recently Vice Chair of the Springfield District Democratic Committee. He is also the Legislative Chair of the Fairfax County Federation of Citizens Associations.

Frank will be a terrifically valuable asset to the FCDC family to help deliver the vision of the Committee in our mission to elect Democrats, and we all look forward to working with him.

The Fairfax County School Board is composed of 12-members that are elected to four-year terms that are concurrent with the terms of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors; one School Board member represents each of nine magisterial (election) districts, and three members serve at large. The current School Board members’ terms expire on December 31, 2011.

The Fairfax County School Board is charged by the statutes of Virginia and the regulations of the Virginia Board of Education to provide and operate the public schools of Fairfax County. It is the function of the Board to set general school policy and, within the framework of Virginia Board of Education regulations, to establish guidelines that will ensure the proper administration of the county school program.

This election of school board members is required by law to be non-partisan (§ 22.1-57.3(E)). This means that no candidate for school board may be nominated by a political party. The endorsement of a non-party candidate by a political party is permitted.

2011 Fairfax County School Board candidates seeking the endorsement of the Fairfax County Democratic Committee (FCDC) have the following documents and guidelines for the endorsement process, click here. It is the prerogative of the Committee to endorse a candidate for office, but not required.

As a valid candidate the application and filing fee for endorsement for District candidates is due April 1st, and for At-Large candidates is due April 28th. The full Committee will vote for endorsement at the May 24th FCDC General Membership meeting. Local committees have until May 20th to complete their respective endorsement process.

The Mason District Democratic Committee will finalize our endorsement process at our February 15, 2011 regular monthly meeting, and vote for endorsement at our May 18, 2011 regular monthly meeting. Only current members in attendance may vote (per Party Plan no proxy voting is allowed, i.e. you must be present to vote). If selected for endorsement, a candidate for School Board for Mason District would be brought to the full Committee for majority approval at the May 24th FCDC General Membership meeting.

I am pleased to announce the selection of Antonia Scatton as the next FCDC Executive Director. Antonia has held a number of different political positions across the country from Illinois to California to Virginia and other areas. A Chicago native, she now lives in Arlington and has been active in the Arlington County Democratic Committee.

Antonia recently served as Associate Director of Audience and Constituent Relations for the Center for American Progress, where she saw to it that their policy work reached the people who could turn the ideas into reality. Prior to that, she worked as a political communications and new media outreach consultant for the National Prostate Cancer Coalition, Webb for Senate, Wulsin for Congress (OH-2), the Democratic Party of Virginia, and others. More information about Antonia can be found on her web site at www.antoniascatton.com. She will assume the Executive Director duties shortly.

I want to express my thanks to the selection committee who helped me with the hiring process. They were: Mary Ann Hovis, Vice Chair for Finance; Robert Haley, Co-chair of Hunter Mill District; Nadja Golding, FCDC Treasurer; Mark Itzkoff, Regional Vice Chair South; Lola Quintela, Regional Vice Chair Central; and Barbara Caputo, Regional Vice Chair North.

Rex Simmons, FCDC Chair
