What You Need

Virginia’s photo ID law goes into effect on July 1, 2014. To vote, you will need one of the following forms of photo identification:

  1. Virginia Driver’s License or other photo ID issued by Virginia
  2. United States Passport
  3. Any photo ID issued by the United States government
  4. Student ID that has a photograph and that was issued by any institution of higher learning in Virginia
  5. Employee identification card that has a photograph and that was issued by the employer in the ordinary course of business

A few important things to remember:

  • Your address on your photo ID does not have to match the address on your voter registration.
  • You may use an expired ID so long as you still reasonably resemble the picture.
  • Your name on your ID must match your name on the voter registration rolls. If your name has changed, you can obtain a free photo ID from the state with your new name. Check if your name matches by clicking here.

How To Get It

Don’t have a photo ID? You can get a FREE voter identification card from your county registrar in just three easy steps:

STEP 1: Find your county registrar You don’t have to visit the registrar for your county; if a different location is more convenient for you, feel free to go there!

STEP 2: Go to the registrar’s office
The operating hours for each office vary – be sure to check that your office is open before heading out!

  • At the office, you will:
    • Fill out the Voter Photo Identification Application;
Be sure to include the last four digits of your social security number, birthdate, and signature! Without these, your application will not be processed.
    • Get your picture taken
    • Give the registrar your electronic signature

STEP 3: Receive your photo voter ID card

You should receive your photo ID card in the mail within 7-10 days. If you don’t, call the State Board of Elections at 800-552-9745.

  • If you apply for a photo voter ID card less than 21 days before the next election, you’ll receive a temporary ID in the registrar’s office that is valid for 30 days. You will receive your permanent ID through the mail.
